this episode of 30milesOUT was filmed summer of 2010... the bondoc twins and i headed down to the corpus christy area (from san antonio) to hit the flats in the kayaks... the kayak flats fishing was ok but not great... we decided to hit some deeper water at the conjunction of 2 main canals close to aransas pass... i had been to this deep point before... i had hit this spot years ago in my carolina skiff 1960.... it was late summer and the green water was inshore and i caught several RED SNAPPER! i never for got that spot... red snapper inshore was crazy for me... i knew that this point holds crazy offshore fish thou inshore...
jessie and james bondoc and i launched our kayaks close by.... james was in his ocean kayak prowler 13 and jessie was in his scrabbler... i had just bought my new wilderness systems tarpon 16i..... i was pumped about hitting this spot in the new yak... it was a short 300 yard paddle to the point between theses 2 deep canals... we all through out our anchors and began to soak some old cut lady fish dead bait we had from the day before... we caught a few sail fin gafftop catfish but nothing else... i thought the bait was the problem so i decided to catch some live pinn fish (piggy perch)... i took a small piece of skin off the skip jack (lady fish) and detached from my anchor and headed over to the ship docking area.... i put the fish skin on a very small perch hook with a split shot... as soon as it hit the water the pinfish were on... i caught 6-7 in a few minutes and began to head back across the ship channel back to the guys... i gave everyone some live pinfish and i put one out myself....
in no time at all i had a serious bend in my allstar rod... i had 17lb mono line and a good sized 60 spinning reel... i knew i could put the heat on this fish if i had to ... the fish hit the surface and i said "SHARK!" it looked like a bull shark... we got it to the yaks... it put up a good fight and made for a good inshore story... took some pics and put her back in to fight another day... check out this episode of 30milesout.. its short but sweet...
